ADHD Sewing Accommodations

Having ADHD can make complex tasks or tasks perceived to have many steps difficult, and sewing is a craft that typically has many steps. But there are some accommodations to make thing go much smoother.

Buy top thread and matching pre wound bobbins

This means you don't have to spend time filling your bobbins before you can dive right in to a project. There are a range of them available on the market from high quality to low cost. Make sure you have a few full bobbins before you start as this will help you keep your momentum throughout the project.

Cut the pattern

Skip this if you are using a rare or vintage pattern, but if you are using a standard modern, mass produced, off the shelf pattern; ignore the tracers and cut that pattern. If this is the accommodation you needed to get to the next step of your project go for it! If it helps you feel better you can pick up two at the time of purchase in case you want another size later or if you make a mistake.

Avoid the slippery fabric

This one is often emphasised to beginners, but it is important to know that the more slippery a fabric the more pinning will be required. This makes the process take longer which can take the fun out of the project. Some slippery fabrics will work better with stabiliser which again adds an extra step to the process.

Start small

Although you will want to jump into making a multi layer tulle ballgown with bespoke hand beading (or something similarly gorgeous and complex). It is important to build up the needed skills in a manageable way. Start with a simple project in a woven cotton fabric and build up your repertoire of materials and techniques as you progress. Each smaller project you finish will teach you lots and give you a boost to go on.
